I've tried vm workstation also, but it can assign only 10 nics to esxi guest. I know that esxi has a vswitch that work very good with vlan, but i need to assign 14 or at least 12 nics to a one vm (checkpoint firewall appliance named 'GAiA') that must have an interface on all networks for route/nat, check and inspect all traffic on all networks. I've tried MS Hyper-V, obviously found all raid-drives, but, at this point, another problem/requirement arises: I've 14 phisycal nics because in the old environment (vmware server) the Host act also as a firewall/gateway for about 9/10 subnet (bridged with individual nics and with phisycal server) + heartbeat/cluster/iscsi services.

I've tried to change hypervisor product, I've tried to install Oracle vm server but, his installer found the sas raid array, but as a esxi, don't found ich10r neither sil3124 array, only 4 individual drives. I know the 'limitations' that esxi has about softraid controllers, and as a matter of fact, the esxi istallation doesn't recognize my SAS controller, nor ICH10R and see 4 individual drives on the sil3124 (not the raid array). Now, I would try to create a new environment with same hw but on 2 esxi 5.5 (one phisical and one as virtual guest) but, I need to preserve softraid arrays: Marvell 88SE6320 sas controller= 2x150gb sas drives - raid1 (OS + datastore0)intel ICH10R sata controller= 2x140gb ssd drives - raid1 (datastore1)intel ICH10R sata controller= 3 individual sata drives (datastore_BCK)and, on the mainboard there is another pci-x controller (sil3124) that manage a raid 10= 4x1tb sata drives (datastore2). Hello to all! I've a lab environment with 'vmware server 2.0.2' on an asus p6tws pro, x58 chipset, 1cpu quadcore, with 24gb ddr3 and 12 running vms (with a bit of problem with drives I/O performance, but only during vms boot).

In conclusion, I've think to install first esxi on phisical server on a sigle indipendent drive and create a free iscsi appliance that can share, with iscsi protocol and VMDirectPath*, all the raid cards to esxi as a datastores.īut, if this trick works, established that 'vmware Server' has problems about I/O preformance, with this trick/method, will worsen the situation? *I don't know this feature, and I don't know if this 'hw pass-trought' is possible! Sorry for my orrible english!Īny suggestions would be appreciated! Many thanks, Roberto. (I want to use esxi to improve my knowledge on vmware products) Hyper-v can assign only 7 nics to a guest, Oracle vm 24 nics per guest (nice) and, esx 10 nics per guest.ġ0 nics for 'GAiA' guest would be sufficient, i can use the remaining 4 nics for vsphere services.
